Dear Texas A&M Community,
I am pleased to announce that Texas A&M University has selected Canvas by Instructure, Inc. as the university’s new centrally-supported learning management system (LMS). Intensive and deliberative planning is underway to prepare for a phased migration.
The LMS recommendation process included input by faculty from every college, a diverse group of staff members from across campus, and a broad cross-section of students. I am deeply grateful to IT Governance’s LMS Selection Committee for their dedication and active participation. In addition, a partnership across the Office for Academic Innovation, Provost IT, Enterprise Information Systems, and the Division of IT engaged productively in the selection process.
Selection Committee member `Jon Jasperson, a clinical professor and assistant dean at Mays Business School, said: “The Canvas learning management system provides a robust software platform that will support our faculty as we move forward in the digital learning environment of the future. Students and faculty will appreciate the intuitive, easy-to-use interface. Adopting Canvas signals to the academic community that Texas A&M is prepared to meet the needs of the traditional, on-campus student as well as the needs of our growing online student body.”
Texas A&M is pleased to join Vision 2020 peer institutions such as UC Berkeley, the University of Wisconsin, the University of Florida, the University of Michigan, Pennsylvania State University, the University of Texas, and The Ohio State University, among others, who utilize Canvas for their LMS.
In the coming weeks, additional details about the timeline for a gradual, phased transition - along with support for migration activities and course development, FAQs, and other information - will be communicated and available at LMS.tamu.edu. Updates, tips, best practices, and more will be shared frequently throughout the spring and during the LMS migration. As we strive toward adoption of the new LMS, the migration process will have my full support, and with it a commitment to clear communication about the process and its related timelines.
We look forward to the transformational teaching and learning opportunities Canvas offers our students and faculty. Be on the lookout for additional details, or visit LMS.tamu.edu for updates.
Again, thank you to everyone involved in making this important decision.
Carol A. Fierke
Provost and Executive Vice President
