AI Categories of Use
The AI Use Categories give students and instructors a starting point for conversation about AI usage in a course. While these categories are not a one-size-fits-all policy, nor are they meant to replace instructor judgment, they offer a shared way to think about different types of AI use. As every course is different, what is appropriate in one setting may not be in another. The AI Use Categories establish a baseline for usage expectations that may be more clearly communicated and understood.
Categories and Levels of AI Use
Categories:
- Corrective: Enhancing accuracy and clarity by correcting grammar, spelling, calculations, or structure
- Creative: Generating original content, ideas, or media, including writing, images, and multimedia
- Analytical: Simplifying complex information by summarizing, interpreting data, or providing insights
- Instructive: Offering additional guidance, explanations, or practice to support understanding and learning
Levels of AI Use:
- Level I: Minimal AI use, restricted to basic tools that enhance accuracy without altering content meaning
- Level II: Moderate AI use, allowing support for understanding and improving content, but not creating original work
- Level III: Extensive AI use, encouraging creative, analytical, and instructive applications with proper attribution
Corrective AI Use Enhancing accuracy and clarity by correcting grammar, spelling, calculations, or structure
Level I: Basic spell check, grammar correction, simple calculators for arithmetic
Level II: sentence restructuring, citation formatting, formula creation, style suggestions
