FAQs: AI at Work

Explore how AI is transforming the workplace at Texas A&M University. This FAQ section answers common questions about job impact, data privacy, ethical use, and productivity tools. Learn how AI can enhance your role and gain the knowledge you need to work confidently and responsibly in an AI-enabled environment.

  1. Will AI replace my job or change my responsibilities?

AI is not intended to replace staff roles but to enhance them by automating repetitive tasks and supporting decision-making. While some responsibilities may shift, the goal is to free up time for higher-level work that requires human judgment, creativity, and relationship-building.

  2. What kind of data is AI collecting about me, and how is it used?
AI systems used by Texas A&M University may process data such as email interactions, scheduling patterns, or system usage metrics to improve efficiency or personalize support services. However, all data use complies with FERPA, institutional policy, and relevant privacy laws. We are actively working to ensure transparency and limit data collection to what is necessary and appropriate.
  3. How does the university ensure ethical use of AI?
Our institution follows guiding principles around fairness, accountability, and transparency in all AI use. We are in the process of reviewing and adopting responsible AI policies that address algorithmic bias, explainability, and human oversight. Staff input is a valuable part of this process, and we encourage questions or concerns.
  4. Are there AI tools I should be using to improve productivity?
Yes. Tools like generative AI for writing assistance, AI scheduling assistants, or smart document summarizers are available and supported by the institution. A list of approved tools and use cases is available at https://it.tamu.edu/ai-services/.
  5. Do I need to learn new skills to work effectively with AI?
While you don’t need to become a data scientist, basic AI literacy is increasingly important across roles. Skills such as prompt design, critical evaluation of AI outputs, and understanding AI limitations will help staff collaborate more effectively with these tools.
  6. Are there guidelines for using AI responsibly at work?
Yes, Texas A&M University is developing clear guidelines to support ethical and effective AI use, including when it’s appropriate to use generative AI, expectations around data privacy, and attribution requirements. Until formal guidelines are released, we recommend checking with your supervisor or HR when in doubt.
